It seems that ever since the latest big update to my Internet Security suite every time the 'real time scan' runs it wipes out my iTunes library - or more exactly it seems to rename it or interferes with iTunes own nightly routine - either way the end result is I open my iTunes on my HP Win7 and iTunes library is empty. The music is there, but the library it is connected to has been renamed and cannot be found. Thinking it was strictly an iTunes issue today I uninstalled and reinstalled and now I have duplicates of everything, some with my most recent genre definitions, some with the original, Argh!. When I went to the iTunes forum there seems to be a consensus that it is a conflict between AVG and iTunes. Here is the thread; https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4920461?start=0&tstart=0

They say you are looking into it, but in the meantime that we who are having this issue (and there are a LOT of us) and are unwilling to give up the AVG protection in favor of MSE or some other service, should disable scanning of that folder. Some of the more adept have already tried that and says it doesn't work. I checked, and my scan is set to bypass media but I'm not sure if that includes the iTunes library folder. I have no desire to give up my AVG Internet Security, but I would like to have my iTunes - any help, please!? confused

It would be nice to know if AVG are looking to see if there is a problem at their end they can address with an update. From the looks of things, for now, it seems as if the AVG engine might not be obeying its own exclusion rules, although I'm making that assumption from other people's feedback and haven't installed a copy to test personally.

Anyway I've subscribed to this thread in case any useful information turns up here.

Hi all,

To analyze the issue please provide us with AVG log files and MSinfo output.

Thank you

I'm having the same issue and tried to run the tools to upload my AVG log files and MSinfo output. Attached is the latter. The tool for the log files wouldn't let me check the correct option, and I'm having trouble understanding the manual instructions.

I don't want to keep trying to fix my iTunes until I know the issue is resolved though, so I wanted to post in hopes I'll get an update :-)

Disappearing iTunes Library..

I'm in the same boat as all of you. I could scream angry
2 year paid subscription renewal and this problem of the disappearing iTunes library started 2 days ago. I can only hope this problem is resolved in a timely manner. Ignoring the problem only upsets the customer. I don't want to use another antivirus program, so far AVG2013 has been reliable, and I've had no problems. If developers can't fix this, I'll be forced to use something else and get my money refunded.

For those that want to restore your iTunes library (yes its still there) I found the following info helpful.

The section of using a "more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be renamed as iTunes Library.itl to restore the library to a recent state" is what helped me.
After renaming the current (corrupt) version of my iTunes library file and then renaming the most recent temp file (iT 9.tmp) as iTunes Library.itl it worked perfectly.

So just look in the folder for iTunes. You'll see a list of temp files, makes sure to click on Date modified and it will list the tmp files by date. Use the most recent one before the "problems" started.
Unfortunately you'll have to do this several times since AVG refuses to leave those files alone. The steps listed above are just temporary, but one way of returning your iTunes library.

I've enclosed my logs as well.

Hi all,

Tomorrow morning there will be an antivirus update released which fixes the problem temporarily. AVG is working on permanent solution.

We apologize for inconvenience. Thank you
