AVG Free Edition 9.0.707
Virus DB 271.1.1/2686 dated 2/13/10

Windows XP 32-bit with Service Pack 3
Pentium 4 3.0 GHz
3Gb Memory

No other Antivus software installed or previously uninstalled
Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6.2.46 updated 2/10/2010
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.44 DB Version 3733 2/13/2010
Javacool Spyware Blaster 4.2 DB loaded 2/10/2010
Windows Defender 1.1.1593.0 Engine 1.1.5406.0 Definition 1.75.657.0 2/11/2010
COMODO Firewall 3.14.130099.587
Zone Alarm 80.065.000 is installed but not currently enabled at boot

Running the AVG virus full scan results in the computer rebooting after about 10 minutes. Scans used to take hours (overnight) to run. I'm not sure what has caused the reboot to start occuring.

Any ideas on why a full scan now reboots the computer?

You seem to have lot of other security software installed, are you sure that no active parts are enabled there?

Also could you navigate to C:\Windows\minidump folder and check if there are any dump files created during computer reboot?

To clarify...
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware has no resident application; it is an on demand scanner only
Windows Defender does not launch on startup
Spybot Search and Destroy Tea Timer resident scan is not enabled
Spyware Blaster defines restricted sites in Internet Explorer with no resident components

Malwarebytes and the COMODO firewall are the only applications that are different from what I have used for 3-5 years. Malwarebytes is an additional scanner that I began using but does not have a resident component.

The problem with AVG full scans rebooting the computer has only occured with AVG 9.0. Previous versions did not have any problems scanning.

There are dump files in the C:\Windows\minidump folder. There are 18 dump files dating from 1/10/2010 up to 2/14/2010, each 88 KB in size.

Hi,

could you please provide us with the latest minidump file? (upload it to some favourite online storage)

Else this looks like registry corruption (from my first look), could you please try to run AVG scan without "Scan system environment" function?

Thanks

I am out of town until Friday, Feb 19 so I won't be able to provide the most recent dump file or try an AVG scan without "Scan system environment" function until then.

The AVG scan completed successfully without "Scan System Environment" checked.

Here is a link to the latest mini dump

I had the same problem and found a setting for rebooting the computer.
From the Scheduled Scans tab on the main screen click on the link "Additional Scan Settings..." This will opena little ialog that has two checkboxes oon it. The first says "Shutdown computer after scan cpompletion" Uncheck this box, then click the OK button in the dialog box.
BTW, I am running AVG 9.0.730 in Vista Home Premium.

Happy hunting!

Thanks for the suggestion. This isn't the problem in my case as the check box to "shutdown the computer after scan completion" is unchecked and the computer reboots long before the scan would be complete. There is something else causing the problem.

Hi,

this seems to be a HW problem as the dump reports memory corruption. Can you test your pc with memtest?

You can download Memtest86 program from following webpage:

The memory test indicated bad memory so I removed the bad memory and ran the memory test again without errors. I then ran an AVG scan overnight with "Scan system environment" checked and once again the computer rebooted before completion.

Here is a link that includes both minidump files:
