I was having a problem where 8.5 Update Manager was failing. So, yesterday (June 21, 2009), I downloaded the latest version of AVG Free ver. 8.5. I uninstalled the previous version, then installed the copy that I downloaded on 6/21. The update manager is still failing. The update manager gets to file 1 of 5, nothing happens (no activity shows in the progress bar) and it eventually times out.

After installing the latest version, I am now getting an message from Resident Shield that ws2_32.dll is infected with win32/patched virus. The virus is not being cleaned and the virus message continues to come up when programs are launched. I ran a scan of the PC and three files were listed as infected, AVG Free 8.5 says it was cleaned, but the messages continue to occur.

How do I clean the win32/patched virus? What do I need to do to get the update manager to update?

The PC is running XP SP3
AVG Free 8.5 374a 1564
I am on a different PC so I don't have the exact virus def file, but it was the current file yesterday, 6/21/09
The only antivirus software ever on the PC has been AVG Free

Hi,
mentioned file is probably injected by malware and needs to be replaced with original file to run properly. Please follow these steps to replace the file:

Insert the Windows 2000/XP installation CD to the CD drive and re-boot your computer. If you are asked, please select any option required to boot your computer from CD-ROM.

- When "Welcome" dialog is displayed, press R to start the Recovery Console.
- Choose the Windows operating system that you want to repair.
- Enter the administator password or press <Enter> in case the password is blank.
- Type following commands and hit <Enter> key (please proceed one by one).

D: (if D: is label of the CD-ROM, change if other)
cd i386
expand ws2_32.dl_ C:\Windows\system32

exit

- Restart your computer and boot your Windows normally.

Detailed description of Windows Recovery Console may be found here:

If a service pack has been installed after the system was built... use the following when in the Recovery Console instead of what ondraploteny suggested... This makes certain that the proper version is copied.

copy C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\ws2_32.dll c:\WINDOWS\system32\ws2_32.dll

.

Then read what the post before mine stated or restore it from some backup that you've made. If you are unable to, take it to a technician that can.
