Hello,

I have a Dell laptop that runs Windows XP. I used to run AVG Free 8.0 just fine. When I went to do the update for the new version, it installed, but then kept saying "Access forbidden". I followed all of the steps to correct the problem, with no luck. I uninstalled the program and have tried to now reinstall and I now cannot even install the program. I keep getting the error message: 0xE001C04E, working connection to the internet cannot be found. However, I am connected to the internet, DSL, high speed, I can navigate online perfectly.
Is there anything I can do to correct this problem? I have tried fixed my network connection pages. I do not use a proxy server. I have a configured Linksys router, which works for the internet. Currently I have no virus protection on my computer.
Thank you in advance for the help with this issue.

Here is the information I have regarding the problem...

Computer: Dell Laptop
Operating system: Windows XP
Internet Provider: AT & T
No Proxy. The only thing I use is a Linksys Router because of a work computer also using the internet connection. Connection is high speed wireless. (DSL)
Anti-Virus on computer: None
Firewall: Normal firewall for computer.

Internet issues:
I am connected to the internet and able to browse all websites. The only problem I am currently experiencing is difficulty in sending emails from my Gmail account. My facebook page also does not seem to want to load. This website is working fine. All other websites load and work fine. Yahoo mail account is also slow.

AVG problem:
I had 7.5 which ran perfectly. I waited until I had to upgrade, and then upgraded to 8.5. For one day and one day only it worked. Then I kept getting Update Failed messages. It said Access is Forbidden by server. I went to FAQ and followed instructions. The problem was not corrected. I have installed and uninstalled the program several times. I have registered my account.
The latest problem now is that I am unable to even download AVG Free 8.5. It will only allow me to save it to the computer. When I double click and click Run, it comes up as install wizard and then begins to check for internet connection. That is when I get error message 0xE001C04E. It says is cannot find active internet connection and to try again. I have followed instructions to correct my connection. I have rebooted the computer. I have deleted the file on my desktop, rebooted, redone connection, rebooted again and then tried to download program. It has all failed.

I hope someone can help me b/c at this point I am so frustrated!
Thank you.

The normal methods that Windows uses to uninstall programs with seldom work well enough for antivirus programs which means that there are leftovers that can later affect a system if these are left behind without properly cleaning these up. Usually issues do not show up until long after the uninstallation was first done, sometimes it's even years later. The companies that make the antivirus programs have known of this issue for a long time which is why most also have created uninstall/cleanup utilities to address this problem.

We have links to many of these utils listed in this sticky post Before Installing AVG 8.5 Free Edition. Please run the proper uninstall/cleanup utility for the antivirus that you had installed previously on your computer to ensure that you have no issues or to address issues you may now be experiencing.

Add the AVG files listed in this FAQ 1334: What AVG processes and URLs need to be allowed in 3rd party firewalls/programs that are also installed in your computer to the firewall's permissions/exceptions list giving them full internet access. If the AVG files are already listed in your firewall properly, remove and then re-add them back to ensure the settings are current.

Please read and follow the instructions in How To Clean An Infected Computer

If you can not download or update the utils on the infected system try downloading both the programs and their updates on another computer and then copy them to a CD, DVD or USB disk to use on the infected system.

If you do happen to find malware that AVG does not detect when cleaning the system, please follow these instructions What to do if you suspect a file, registry setting or website is infected and not currently detected by AVG

small question, what is the name of used installation file?

Else please try to use the full installation file from this website - now named "avg_free_stf_en_85_406a1616.exe"

Thanks

The website you added in the last mail took me to the same page I am downloading it from. All it will do is save the exe file to my desktop, that file is called avg_free_stb_en_8_30_free.
Description is AVG Download Manager. When I double click this, I get the prompt to run the file. It opens and asks what language I want. I select English, click Next then it says testing Internet Connection. It then gives me a message that says AVG cannot detect a working internet connection and to check my Proxy settings. However, I don't have any. I am directly connected with a hard wire, not wireless at this moment. My internet is running fast and it should have no problem.
So that's where I'm at. The only trouble I am having is with my internet mail. Gmail and Yahoo take forever to send a message. I can open emails, but sending takes forever and it gets locked up. Not sure if I have some sort of virus preventing me from downloading an anti-virus software. At this point I'm not sure what else to do.
Thanks for any help you can provide. I would just very much like to get avg up and running again.

Ok. I used that link and got it installed. Now I'm dealing with the Access Forbidden by server AGAIN. I tried to update with firewall off, same message. It varies between update connection to the server failed and access forbidden. I downloaded the access forbidden fix and got the file, rmagent_en to fix the problem. I downloaded and rebooted. The system seemed to be fine. Then when I clicked update, I got the connection message again. I have no idea why it cannot read my connection. I followed the instructions to click on the link. It popped right up. I'm not using a proxy. I have a hard wire DSL line in my computer right now. Then I Clicked update again and it said access forbidden.
Any help on this one?

You are still having update problems.... See if you can view the following two files in your internet browser and report back the results.

http://guru.avg.com/softw/80free/update/avginfowin.ctf

http://guru.avg.com/softw/80free/update/avginfoavi.ctf

1st line should read.... AVG CTF Index File;ver(10)

Please read this FAQ 1867: Access is forbidden by server

And since this is normally caused by malware from my experience...
