I was told to go into AVG, click on components, choose resident shield, click on "manage exceptions," and then click on add path. Then add the itunes and ipod paths (probably c:\programs\itunes and c:\programs\ipod) and click on apply. AVG is recognizing some itunes files as trojans and until AVG fixes the problem, doing this will make your itunes program work.

I did it and it worked, but I sure hope the guy who suggested it knew what he was talking about and that this isn't going to add even more problems down the road. Until I did this, I could not use my itunes and I could not even re-install it.

Would be nice if AVG would post something on their home page about it, whether it is their problem or not, but I sure didn't see it.

yeah i would just like to say to avg, way to go! you managed to make a fake virus with a fake extension and put it on itunes! yeah! now you've pretty much screwed over everyone who uses your product into thinking they really do have a virus and make them all freak out! Congrats!

Guys, I'm not so sure this isn't a false detect for iTunes. AVG detected this trojan with a legit itunes dll, now it detects and deletes and iTunes setup download, choosing ignore results in a deletion anyway. I suspect new virus definitions for AVG are causing this.

Hey guys. This is just a false alarm that is only affecting the AVG Free Edition. My work computer runs the full AVG Security Suite and it did not detect any viruses within iTunes, but when I uninstalled it and re-installed with the AVG Free Edition, the scan found over 90 .BOG viruses. I then used my laptop to run scans with Norton, McAfee, SpySweeper, and Malwarebytes and found nothing, but immediately after installing AVG Free Edition on the laptop and opening iTunes, AVG started going crazy finding all sorts of "viruses" in iTunes, then shut it down and rendered it useless. If you notice, all of the .BOG viruses are pointing to the same location, so I created an exception, reinstalled iTunes, and the problem is gone. Again, this is just a FALSE ALARM, not anything to worry about, but I hope AVG fixes it soon, because I had to install iTunes 4 times before figuring this out, and it's starting to get annoying.

Oh, and to MarijuanaMonster, the issues is not that it's replicating itself, it that the "virus" is in your system restore. AVG cannot remove viruses from System Restore, because write access is only given to the System Restore software. To take care of this issue, you will need to delete your restore points that contain the supposed virus. The easiest way to do this is to go into "My Computer", click the "System Restore" tab, check the ""Turn Off System Restore" selection box, then click "Apply". WARNING...this will delete all restore points that have been created. Also, there really is no point in doing this until AVG fixes this false .BOG detection issue, because right after you turn System Restore back on and you or your computer creates its first restore point, AVG will detect it as a virus again. Please note that this only applies if the .BOG virus originated from iTunes.

To everyone in this thread:

It appears definition file 270.13.29/2260 has corrected this issue - it was a false positive. Open AVG, click on "update now" and it won't detect iTunes/iPod stuff again. After updating AVG be sure to go to the Manage Exceptions list in your Resident Shield window and remove the pathways for iTunes & iPod - if you created an exception!

DeamonCyborg - ALL AV/AS programmes will have false positives from time to time, especially when heuristic scanning is enabled. I have had four false positives with an antimalware programme I use in the last four months, yet this is the 1st FP with AVG I have had since installing it 1yr ago. That's not bad in my view.
