Hi.
I have been running AVG Free 9.0.819 and virus database version
271.1.1/2868 with no problems until now. I am running Windows XP Service
pack 3.
What I first noticed (only today) was I suddenly could no longer
directly access the Microsoft Update page using Internet Explorer 8.
It kept saying the page could not be loaded and to check my internet
settings, and all the while each of my other browsers worked fine.
I noticed this today only because there were the usual updates from
Microsoft and I could not bring up the Microsoft Update web page as I
normally do, to download them.
I was able to download the latest version of the Microsoft Windows
Malicious Software removal tool, through the "auto downloader" in my
system tray.
And after the update was installed, the Microsoft Windows Malicious
Software removal tool ran itself.
The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software removal tool then said that
Malicious software had been removed from my system, and proceeded to do
a full scan in order to completely remove things.
After around two hours or so, the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software
removal tool said that the "Win32/Alureon.H" Virus had been found.
But I noticed that the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software removal tool
did not list any file that was infected by the virus, only the name of
the virus "Virus:Win32/Alureon.H" was listed. And it was listed as an
infection.
The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software removal tool then said that I
should scan with an anti-virus program, in order to fully remove it.
Is my version of AVG Free able to detect and/or repair this
"Win32/Alureon.H" Virus? After looking around a bit I could not find
mention of that virus by name on the AVG website.
AVG Free 9.0.819 is currently running a full scan on my system, and thus
far has not found anything yet.
What should I do? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I don't know what to do. How should I proceed?
As I said, the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software removal tool did not
list any particular file as being infected with "Win32/Alureon.H"
So I don't know what files I need to replace.
Can my version of AVG Free help in cleaning this up?
Many thanks for your time.
