Good day

Linux Mint 14
I do not know which AVG version I have or what update number I have.
I just downloaded the lastest AVG off the AVG site.

I am new to Linux and reading through hordes of forums to try and get this going with no luck.

The situation: I am trying to scan a external HDD attached to my Linux desktop with AVG.

So AVG is operational on my Linux box and it is updated. But battling with the instructions I just cannot get it right.

Here is a thread that lays it out nicely;
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Antivirus/Avg

But following these steps I do not understand the final instruction where I actually type and tell Linux to scan the HDD.

Typing the blkid instruction gives me the following;

/dev/sda1: UUID="f70bf55d-8075-4987-9da5-1d4e6ebb4271" TYPE="ext4"
/dev/sda5: UUID="ab121917-79fc-4868-81ab-4d830ebb98a8" TYPE="swap"
/dev/sdb1: UUID="5D95EB1C65C6B702" TYPE="ntfs"
/dev/sdb2: LABEL="HP_RECOVERY" UUID="3EC6-2E70" TYPE="vfat"
/dev/sdb3: UUID="627CA8717CA841A1" TYPE="ntfs"

I want to scan the bottom hdd/partition. So according to the thread I have to type;
sudo avgscan/?media/"627ca8717ca841a1"

which gives me the following result:

AVG command line Anti-Virus scanner
Copyright (c) 2013 AVG Technologies CZ

Virus database version: 3211/6591
Virus database release date: Mon, 19 Aug 2013 17:34:00 +0200

/media/627ca8717ca841a1
Object scan failed; Specified file was not found.

Files scanned : 0(0)
Infections found : 0(0)
PUPs found : 0
Files healed : 0
Warnings reported : 0
Errors reported : 1

So reading this I take it the scan did not happen because I typed the instruction incorrectly.

Please assist and thank you in advance for any assistance.

Gideon

Is the device /dev/sdb3 mounted somewhere? You can list mounted devices with mount command. The partition needs to be mounted first then it can be scanned.

Thank you for the advice. :laughing: :laughing: :laughing:

My Linux Mint Beast is busy processing some other work right now.
As soon as its done I will check and confirm.

But as far as I know, I have just connected the external HDD, have not done any special instructions to mount the external HDD.

Thanks

Gideon

external HDD..

Hi,

I'm getting the same error message:
Object scan failed; Specified file was not found.

Only when trying to scan an external HDD:

/dev/sdb2 on /media/**name of hdd*** type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,default_permissions,blksize=4096)

It is mounted as I can see the eject icon next to it in the home folder. So what's the piece I don't know. Is is about permissions?
