Hello Gustaf. I previously installed the AVG for Linux (latest version) after ia32libs on my Linux Mint 15 x64 system and it works fine from the command line. However, a GUI would be better, so I downloaded and gave yours a try. Followed your apt-get instructions to the letter. However, I got this error message at the end in terminal and cannot find the package on my system at all:

Reading package lists... Done
E: Invalid operation avg-gui

I can always script something but your GUI looks so much better for on-demand use. Any ideas??

BTW: I would pay for a full featured AVG for Linux.

Thanks in advance for your help. smile

Thanks for your feedback.

The error you got is strange if you did as instructed, it would be helpful if you posted the output of your attempts to install AVG-GUI.

The goal of the AVG-GUI is to provide a free and useful GUI for AVG Linux / BSD.

So, instead of paying, you can make a donation.
Before installing AVG-GUI, you should wait a day because a new version of AVG-GUI comes within days.

Some of the news in the next version of the AVG-GUI:

1. New main interface.

2. Source code moved to GitHub.

3. API to inform users of scanning/update process included.

4. Nowadays support for BSD systems. Note: This has not been tested, so be careful!

New version of AVG-GUI is here, 1.7.5

Ubuntu (Raring)/Linux Mint 15 installation problems
JonKG had problems to install AVG GUI, but it was my fault.
My blunder was that the AVG GUI for Ubuntu (Raring) / Linux Mint 15 was not in the repositories.
I apologize to JonKG and everyone else affected by this.

This is now fixed.

sudo gtk-update-icon-cache -f /usr/share/icons/hicolor/

2. Done!

If you have made an improvement of the AVG GUI so you can do a 'pull request' on GitHub.

AVG-GUI Depends

* sudo (standard in many Linux distros such as Ubuntu/Debian)
* Perl (for Virus vault GUI function)
* Python (standard in many Linux distros)
* PyGTK or PyGObject (standard in many Linux distros)
* Gawk (standard in many Linux distros)
* GNU sed (for Virus Vault GUI function)

Real-time protection with GUI

AVG-GUI is now offers real-time protection with GUI. (note: BETA function, but worked)

Real-time protection with GUI requires Fanotify, and is by default diabled, but can be activated.
Users with BSD systems can`t use this feature.
This is not compatible with 'avgsetup' command-line solution.

Solution to enable real-time protection with GUI:

1. Click on AVG-GUI Tray icon.
2. Click on "Real-time protection: OFF" menuitem.
3. Done!

Installation

If you running Debian/Ubuntu/Linux Mint(-based):

1. Run this in terminal:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:forumgh/universial

2. Run this in terminal:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install avg-gui

If you running BSD/Other Linux:

1. Download this: http://www.mediafire.com/download/v0y5hbv1j7fsjr2/avg-gui-1.7.5.tar.gz and extract archive.

2. Open a terminal on place with extracted archive and run this:
make && sudo make install && make clean

RPMs will comming soon for Fedora and other distro users.

Let me just say,'Thank You!' for making a GUI to go along with the AV! I used AVG for alot of years, then a couple of years ago, I swapped over to Linux.
Well, needless to say, there are not alot of Viruses for Linux out there, compared to Windows. I used Clam, but there wasn't any realtime scanning going on.
Since I do get emails from alot of folks that have windows and I also have Wine And Play on Linux installed....I wanted to be safe.
Also, since alot of folks are leaving the Windows ship to never return again, its just a matter of time before the Stuff starts to happen. Again, Thank You.

The GUI installed perfectly, I had to delete the Medibuntu from the source files, then installed in command line.

Question: You said to enable real time protection, click on GUI and click on realtime protection-off....there is not a real time protection heading on my GUI. Have You updated it to include real time protection?

After install, I looked @ Conky on my desktop, and its showing AVG running, was just wondering. Thank You! cool

Thanks for your feedback.

Yes, real-time protection is available in AVG-GUI.
There is no GUI to check the real-time protection (with GUI), real-time protection is designed that it just displays a message when an infected object is detected, not in other instances.

A GUI to check the status of real-time protection is planned for later versions.

If you make changes in the AVG GUI, so I would be grateful if you showed exactly what changes are made, in order to see if it will included in official AVG-GUI source code.

There is no information about the file scanning in the GUI.
That's because it was tough to get information about which file is scanned, it takes about 6 seconds and more to get the latest information about which file is scanned.
I guess it's not so popular to get old information.

I'm going to try to speed up the process in the AVG GUI, so that the GUI will also show which file is scanned at the moment.
