So I decided to test the AVG free trial to see how well it worked. I didnt like the intrusive nature and decided to uninstall it. However, I can not get the AVG search page to stop appearing in my new tabs window for Chrome. The google new tabs page is far superior to the AVG search engine IMHO.

I have tried:

1.
Open Chrome.
Click on 'Tools' (the wrench icon)
Click on 'Settings'
Locate the ‘Home page’ section, and choose ‘Use the New Tab page’.
Locate the 'Search' section, and choose your preferred search provider.
Close Chrome.

2.
In Google Chrome
1. Click the wrench icon in upper-right corner and select Settings or Options if you are using an older Chrome version.
2. Select a new default search engine using the drop down menu under Search column.
3. Click Manage search engines button.
4. Select AVG Secure Search and click on the X on the right to delete it.
5. Click the Set pages link Under On Startup column.
6. Delete the AVG Search page by clicking on the X on the right.
7. Click OK and restart Chrome.

3.
Clicked Wrench
Click Tools
Click Extensions
Remove AVG toolbar from the extensions

4.
Download the AVG_toolbar_remover.exe
Install
Run

All these things have failed to remove the AVG search from my new tabs in google chrome.
Part of the problem is these instructions are outdated, google chrome has been updated and the settings and buttons are found in different locations, but even when done properly it still seems to have no effect on removing AVG from my new tabs page.

And while typing this post, my homepage has been reset from google.com to:

http://mysearch.avg.com/tab?cid={9D0508FD-1CEF-44F2-AA38-88F408D60544}&mid=725773288b9d47d390dfd1191024e9fb-39e9c14a85ecfbb920af420f68fd394101ab92b1&lang=en&ds=AVG&pr=sa&d=2013-03-25%2013:06:30&v=15.0.0.2&pid=safeguard&sg=1&sap=nt

without my knowledge of how or why...

If anyone has any ideas of how to fix this problem, I would be exremely grateful. This whole experience has been a nightmare that I just want to end. My next move is to completely reinstall windows, and I sincerely hope I dont have to do all that.

Thanks for your time
Jack

Before you do that above procedure please go to first to the control panel (programs) uninstall a program then uninstall the avg tool bar and avg safe search engine.. then proceed the 1,2 & 3 above..

What I did..

Run regedit.exe as an administrator (press windows icon, search for it)
Search avg and check each key that you get as a result
If it has anything to do with the toolbar kill it
Check the parent object to make sure
A lot of ScriptHelpers

One called AVGTP_LEGACY has a null, it won't get removed normally. Right click to Permissions, then advanced, owner
Set the owner to admin (select Administrators)
Press Apply
Press OK
Owner Rights - Check Full Control
Do the same for the child objects
Delete AVGTP_LEGACY

By now you will have likely noticed that this is really dug in

Next go to the Chrome settings > On startup

Notice it is set to Open a specific page or set of pages.

Press Set pages and press the X on the far left of the AVG page and press OK. For good measure set it to "Open the New Tab page" or similar.

Go to your program files; if you have a Program Files x86 search there

You have an AVG folder there

Find the names of all the executables in the folder and open task manager
Find their corresponding processes
Right click them and open their properties
Navigate to security>edit
Select User Accounts and Full Control, OK, OK
Close the processes
Delete the files (can only be done when processes are down, otherwise error shows)

Change folder permissions as well (containing folder) and delete it (I believe it should work)

If you need something clearer just ask

I just created the login to say thank you.
This post finally worked.

I cannot believe how awful AVG is. And they call themselves anti-virus.
They act like a virus themselves.
