I have a very outdated version of AVG Link Scanner 9.0 installed on my 2011 Macbook Pro, running OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.2. It is eating up resources like crazy and bogging down my whole system. I attempted to remove the application file and now it seems the file is gone, but Link Scanner is still running. When I try to quit processes it restarts again a few seconds later, so I have disabled it for the time being. I have tried to download the installer/uninstaller and use that to remove the file but since the application isn't there it can't find it to remove it... I've also tried installing an updated version and get an error that says my settings don't allow for installation/uninstallation of non Mac files and to go to the settings, but when it opens settings there is no application available to apply them to (included SS's). I've combed the web looking for a fix for this, and though there is a thread on this forum that was solved, it still hasn't been able to solve my problem. I've attempted to use the manual uninstall as well, via terminal, it reads part of the string as an "unknown command". I haven't tried it as a root user, yet, I'm going to attempt that now, but I could really use some support on this one. I can't even use AppCleaner because the application is no longer on my system. I appreciate any help you can offer in this matter, thank you for your time.

As stated, I have all ready tried all the steps present in the thread you provided and followed the instructions, none of which worked. So I'm looking for another option, or perhaps that I didn't do one of the steps correctly? I still see the icon at the top of my screen, though disabled it says active, and though it's set to not start automatically, it still does. I also attempted the manual remove as a root user in terminal and that did not work either. Once I got to this step in the manual uninstallation (rm -f /usr/sbin/avgctl) it started saying "Permission denied:" and continued on from that point.

Hello CherryC4ke,

You should be able to automatically uninstall it using linked package, but if you are trying to remove it manually "Execute the following commands as a root in a terminal window" mean that you open terminal write "su" (it will log you as root and all future commands will be executed as root).
