Hello everyone,

please be informed the issue is caused by incorrect value in the following registry keys, based on developer's analysis:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders:CommonAppData

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders:CommonAppData

(available on 64-bit systems)

- C:\ProgramData is the correct value for both the abovementioned strings.
- More information on Registry Editor can be found here.
- Incorrect values in these keys may result in errors while installing other software too.

Developers are preparing a work-around for this issue in AVG setup (so AVG could be installed even with these values in registry incorrect) in one of the following program versions.

--
EDIT by jirka82: The fix is valid for 32-bit systems as well (previously announced exclusively for 64-bit systems). This post has been updated.
EDIT 2 by jirka82: More information on searching in the registry editor can be found in this post.
EDIT 3 by jirka82: Alternatively, you could import registry file available in this zip archive which will overwrite the abovementioned keys automatically.
--

Thank you.

Correction for some systems..

For some people this will not be the solution,
C:\ProgramData is not always the correct value.
The correct value for me was D:\ProgramData,
as when I installed windows I used the Sysprep tool to relocate the ProgramData and User folders to a separate HDD.
So in my case it was Windows fault for not correctly assigning those registry values (They were set to C:\ProgramData)

The Awesome; you said "For some people this will not be the solution,

I also used Sysprep tool to relocate ProgramData and User folders using audit mode for a new computer with the system already installed on C:. I moved the folders to E:, but when i go to E: i find that user folders but not the ProgramData. I then opened the registry and looked for ProgramData. I found it at C: but with i try to install AVG i still get the error code. Are you saying that i need to change C:ProgramData to E:ProgramData in the registry????
Regards,

For anyone still suffering from this

jirka82 wrote

Is an incorrect statement. It is entirely possible to relocate these directories during windows installation, see:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/win7-how-do-i-move-user-folder-to-a-different/565f16a5-e5ed-43c9-8422-4f56aebb296e

software should not assume the locations of these directories.

In this circumstance modifying the registry to change the values back to the c drive could well corrupt your windows installation. Hopefully AVG will consider their proposed 'solution' in more detail and revise it appropriately.

If you are suffering from this installation problem and your ProgramData directory is not in the default location then one workaround is to create a junction on C: to point to the actual location where these directories exist. This will act like a super-shortcut and redirect everything to the correct location.

To do this, at a command prompt execute:

C:\>mklink /J c:\ProgramData d:\ProgramData
Junction created for c:\ProgramData <<===>> d:\ProgramData

C:\>mklink /J c:\Users d:\Users
Junction created for c:\Users <<===>> d:\Users

Note that if your folders are in a different location, then amend the second path in the commands above.

Hope this helps! Here's hoping that at some point there will be a version of AVG that doesn't make invalid assumptions about drive & folder layouts.
