Hey guys, I just quit the game i was playing and looked as task manager and realised vprot.exe was using over 1.1gb of physical memory and my game was only using 500mb.

I know this is an application associated with AVG and wanted to know if i can permanently remove vprot.exe or heavily reduce it's resource usage as it really shouldn't need over 100mb of memory in my opinion.

I have tried disabling this application on startup using msconfig, but it still turns itself on.

I am using windows 7 64bit.

Thanks in advance,
Aaron.

VPROT.EXE resets NewTabPageShow..

Hi!
I've got another problem with VPROT.EXE!
I want to permanently change "NewTabPageShow"=dword:00000000 to "NewTabPageShow"=dword:00000002 in [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TabbedBrowsing].
But everytime after REBOOT of my PC, the value has been reset to "NewTabPageShow"=dword:00000000. I'm running W7 Ultimate 64 bit and IE9.
Virus protection AVG 2012, license no. 9A-NXAQP-J0R23-3FP0A-YBXMB.

Your vprot.exe is the culprit!

When I disable vprot.exe through MSCONFIG.EXE, tab Start, and reboots, the NewTabPageShow comes up as wanted with dword:00000002.
Enabling vprot.exe again and reboot, the NewTabPageShow comes up with dword:00000000 (blank page).

Details from MSCONFIG.EXE:

Key Starup Item: VProtect Application
Manufacturer: Unknown
Command: "C:\Program Files (X86)\AVG Secure Search\vprot.exe"
Located: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Date Disabled:

How can I setup Windows or AVG to avoid this annoying problem?
Or should I permanently disable your vprot.exe application?

Hello OldShatterhand,

Please accept our apology for late response, but your post got buried somehow.

If you want to prevent this registry key to be changed, please follow steps mentioned in this howto article to change access permissions on registry keys.

Thank you.
