Help. I have AVG Free on my computer but I was recently infected with the System Check virus. It keeps popping up and saying I have critical system errors. I've run several scans with AVG but it is not finding anything. Is there a new update I do not know about.

I did some research online and found a few sites to help me remove this virus. They recommend downloading a different program while in safe mode with networking. Here's the site: http://freetechsupport.com/virus-removal/how-to-remove-system-check/

Should I do this or wait for a new AVG update? Also, will AVG stop this in the future. Thanks

Hello newpcuser,

We can not confirm whether solution offered in the link mentioned by you, will work.

Please provide us with Gmer scan results Msinfo output and AVG Anti-virus scan results for further analysis of this issue.

If you suspect specific files to be infected, please refer to this sticky post.

Thank you.

AVG protected me from System Check..

Honestly, I have AVG free edition and there was the attempt of the virus (System Check) to attack my PC. I had the immediate warning (popup) from AVG and it told me that this is the virus program trying to get into my PC, so thanks to AVG the malware aggression was terminated!

I have researched this problem and found out that there are several programs over the Internet that can handle the virus removal job. Of course, Malwarebytes is the free virus remover and I believe that it can help a lot to delete System Check Malware, in particular. But it didn't tell me how to restore the icons and other important data because of System Check virus amendments. I found out that there are some utilities here http://remove-malwares.blogspot.com/2011/12/system-check-what-heck.html There was a special video guide which explained how to see the data again and to restore it. Anyway, Malwarebytes seems to be one of the few anti-viruses removing malwares for free, so you might try it.

This worked great and it was so Easy!..

I was trying everything and could not get this damn system check off my computer errrrgggghh!

Then someone told me to go to the Spyware Help Center and wow it was so easy! They have a special program to kill the virus and then you can install the removal software. In minutes I was able to remove the virus and then I rebooted the computer and it has not come back. I updated my AVG and I'm hoping the doesn't happen again. I want to thank Spyware Help Center and AVG.

Here's the link to Spyware Help Center where the show you how to remove system check:

Thanks AVG and Spyware Help Center!!!

I recommend this to anyone infected with this crazy virus...

System Check removal procedure..

C'mon guys, this malware (not a virus) comes bundled with a rootkit. It hides certain files and blocks genuine antivirus software (in safe mode too). Your suggestions are pretty much useless. First of all, do not delete any files from your computer manually, especially those located in Temp folder.

Basically you have two options: register rogue program using debugged reg key or use Rkill.exe + Unhide.exe from bleeping computer to stop the rogue program and restore missing files. And only then you can run anti-malware software to remove System Check malware.

Method A:
1. Open System Check malware.
2. Click link "Click here to activate full functional version"
3. Enter made up email and this reg key 1203978628012489708290478989147. Click activate.

See this post: http://deletemalware.blogspot.com/2011/12/remove-system-check-uninstall-guide.html

Now, the rogue program will supposedly fix found errors and restore missing icons/files. At this point, download Malwarebytes or any other antimalware software and run a full system scan. Once finished, run TDSSKiller to make sure your PC is rootkit free http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.exe

Method B:
1. Open Internet Explorer. If the shortcut is hidden, pelase Select Run... from the Start Menu or just hit the key combination CTRL+R on your keyboard. In the Open: field, enter iexplore.exe and hit Enter or click OK.
2. Download and run Rkill.exe http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/rkill
3. Download Unhide.exe and run it http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe
4. Use TDSSKiller http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.exe
5. Scan your computer with anti-malware software.

Finally, as many rogues and other malware are installed through vulnerabilities found in out-dated and insecure programs, UPDATE WINDOWS AND other software.

I hope this helps. Peace!

Hey Myke99. im having somewhat the same problem as the guy you helped. I was able to remove the malware, the system check virus, but all of my programs are still missing. For example.. when i go to my start menu it doesnt show anything except Computer. I was able to use most of my programs and everything fine through the Search bar in the start program, so i opened up firefox and i downloaded malware bytes, installed it, ran a full scan, it found 7 items and deleted them. prompted for restart which i did, but my icons and programs still seem to be missing. but, when i go to organize and folder options and check show hidden files all of my hidden files are still there so im guessing my stuff is still here, all my programs etc its just being hidden perhaps? I dont know, help would be VERY much appreciated, im usually pretty good at removing this stuff but i dont know what to do about recovering this. Thanks in advance man.

Also i tried to download that tdss program.. i dled it and it just wont open or run.

Hello Jibidyquix,

If you are suspecting that infection still remains please provide us with both Gmer scan results Msinfo output and AVG Anti-Virus scan results for further analysis of this issue.

Also for help on your situation please extract OSfix.zip, run fix_disabled_desktop.reg and then AVG_OSfix.vbs.

Thank you.
