I need help. I'm not a tech person; I'm just a regular user.

I tried to update my AVG Free 2012. Last update shows as 09/27/11. The results, though, were a warning saying "Update Failed," followed by "General Error."

What caused this? How do I fix it?

When i try to update the definitions i am getting the Update Failed : General error. I did all the things which are instructed in the other thread like manual update, repair still same error. Please see the attached log file and let me know what is the error. I have latest AVG 2012 march 23 edition.

Hello deep2999,

Analysis of provided information didn't show exact culprit of failed AVG update. I would like to ask you to follow the next steps to uninstall probably unneeded applications, which could be in conflict (influence AVG behavior), and make additional clean up:

1) Recommended applications to be uninstalled, if not used:

Google Toolbar
Live Toolbar
StartNow Toolbar


2) Applications, which could be uninstalled, if not used:

ThinkVantage® Client Security Solution
Yahoo Messenger/Companions


3) Clean-up your computer according to this How-To article

4) Completely reinstall AVG on your computer (make sure all mentioned remained AVG folders are removed)

What is the current situation?

Did all the things instructed but did not solve.

I did go to regedit deleted all the keys related to the AVG. Especially the update files which are stored.

Then got the previous version of the AVG 2011 installed it. Then updated to the 2012. It worked.

One more thing after regedit update the root certificates. But nothing got updated.

Right now its good for me AVG is working as expected.
