I am running win xp pro sp3 and all updates.

I have a Western Digital external drive - ( wd800B015-RNN) that has 3 buttons - one of them is power. When I turn on the unit AVG2011 free starts a scan (as it should). I do some work on 1 or more files, close them and turn off the drive - another scan starts and a pop-up appears saying the device can't be turned off because it is being accessed. This was not a problem with a previous version of AVG Free.

This has happened with version 2.0.13.0 and 1.0.15.0 of wdbtnmgr.exe .

If someone thinks it might help, I would be willing to contact Western Digital.

Hello mike_a,

When the drive is turned on, AVG starts removable devices scan - scanning whole drive. This can take some time, therefore if you try to turn off the drive, it is not possible due to scan still running.

You can disable removable devices scan as follows:
Tools - Advanced settings - Scans - Removable device scan - uncheck 'Enable Removeable device scan'.

Accessed files on hard drive will be still checked by Resident Shield.

Thank you

Hi,

By the time I am done working on the files, the scan that started on turn-on is complete. A new scan starts as I turn-off the drive.

To reiterate, this was not a problem with AVG9 free.

Hello mike_a,

It looks like your external drive is reconnected during turning off.

To better analyze your issue please provide us with log files.
1) Navigate to the AVG log folder
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVG10\Log\
2) Pack All in an archive (zip file)
3) Provide us with it.

Also please try disable Identity Protection component and check if it solve situation.

Hi,

As suggested, I turned off 'identity protection' - still get msg that drive is being accessed when I turn off the drive.

See avglogs.zip at http://www.gamefront.com/files/user/mike-alte

If I missed something, please let me know.

Thanks.

Hi,

As suggested, I renamed avgchsvx.exe to avgchsvx.bac and rebooted, that seems to solve the problem of starting a scan of this external drive when I turn it off. What does avgchsvx do for the overall antivirus system?
Should I 'reactivate' it by renaming it to avgchsvx.exe?

Also attached is requested file - msinfo.zip.

Thanks.

Hello mike_a,

The information and MSinfo output have been passed to our developers for further analysis.

Renaming avgchsvx.exe disables caching of files by AVG.
Caching does not improve security but does improve scanning speed and therefore overall performance.

Thank you
