My laptop has failed to boot (even safe mode) - dll missing.
Windows came as a disk image on CDs - so I cannot reload/repair the system without destroying the installation.

I have removed the disk and put it into a USB then accessed it from my wifes Laptop (to save latest eMails etc).

They both have the latest Free AVG 2011...
Can I access the virus vault and or scan details on the 'USB' disk using the copy of AVG running on this laptop (my Wife's) to determine if it is a quarantined file causing the problem?
Or can I examine them another way?
Or is there another log file that can tell me the missing dll(s)? (or false pointers to dlls?)

Hello WidgetDad,

If the AVG moved the dll file to virus vault it should be possible to restore it using AVG Rescue CD.

You could try to enable boot logging and check to log for further info about boot failure.

AVG rescue CD won't boot..

CD won't boot - "Missing parameter in configuration file"

However - I noticed that there were vertical lines on the display (Is suspect the video drivers that I updated a few weeks ago) - so switched to a simple VGA mode (in Bios) and managed to boot in safe mode (command prompt) - booting then proceeded and failed at...
:
:
...\DRIVERS\avgrkx86.sys
...\DRIVERS\AVGIDESH.sys


...can I just rename the drivers on the disk (accessed using a USB box)?
...or is there something better to do?

PS I have set up and used Unix/Linux for many years (AT&T, SCO, Caldera etc ... Currently SuSE 11.3).

Yes, please try to rename the drivers.
While having access to the drive, also check it for errors.

If the system boot stops on mup.sys after renaming AVG drivers, we would like to kindly ask you to provide us with the following files so our developers can analyze the situation:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg10\log\avgupd.log
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg10\log\avgupdm.log
