I am running on an Intel Core2Duo E7200, 2.53 ghz
- 3 gb RAM
- 44 gb free on C:
- XP Pro SP3
- AVG Free 9.x current update (now uninstalled)
- ZoneAlarm free firewall (currently disabled)

My first attempt to install 2011 was to download the upgrade from cnet (avg_free_stb_all_2011_1136_cnet.exe), which was unable to detect my internet connection.

My second attempt was to download the upgrade from the AVG free website (avg_free_stb_all_2011_1136_upgrade.exe). No joy, same reason.

I ran the uninstall - avg2011remover_en.exe, and then tried to run the full installer. (avg_free_x86_all_2011_1144a3191.exe). Still no joy!! What the heck am I doing wrong?

Here's the error message I get...

Update: Still no resolution to the 2011 installation error, but I have successfully re-installed AVG Free 9.x.

I noticed a new version of the full installer today - avg_free_x86_all_2011_1153a3218.exe. Is this a bug-fix or just an updated database?

Have you seen the Announcement post http://forums.avg.com/ww-en/avg-free-forum?sec=thread&act=show&id=117375 which actually appears on the main 'AVG 2011 Free Edition' forum area page?.

Just to make sure that you are fully aware this forum is only manned by other AVG Free users... (and when available AVG employees)... we don't work for AVG Technologies. Some moderators of this forum are volunteers and contribute their time freely. If you see the AVG logo avatar that signifies that the person works for AVG Technologies. The forum is monitored by the AVG Team so your questions / comments will probably be noted & they may post but unfortunately there is no direct contact for users.... i.e. AVG Technologies don't provide direct tech support for AVG Free. However this is available with the Pro either Trial or Paid for version.

Hopefully a member of the AVG Team based @ Brno in the Czech Rep will see your post & reply but please bear in mind it's now very early Wednesday morning there (Czech Rep time 00:24).

Thanks for the reply Big Al 43! I realize the nature of this forum, and I also realize that beggars can't be choosers.

I posted my message in the hopes that some other user on this board had experienced the same error code that I encountered. I'm sorry if that wasn't clear in my post. I had hoped that a bit of humor would stimulate a response from someone who might be lurking around looking for an answer to the same problem.

Hello toddsmithz,

Error code 0xc0070656 - Error opening installation log file. Verify that the specified log file location exists and that you can write to it.

That is why the needed AVG installation logs are not available.

This could be related with other protection application blocking AVG (check it with uninstalled ZoneAlarm or make sure you are using its latest version) or the access rights to folder*

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\

- are corrupted or incorrectly modified

Please provide us with screenshots of the access rights to this folder (tab in folder properties) or outputs of utility AccessEnum of that folder, and sub-folders MFAdata and AVG10 (if exists).

Thank you

* Some folders could be hidden by default Windows settings. To view hidden files and folders please read How To Display Hidden Files And Folders

WooHoo!!! Success! Thanks ondraploteny!!

I just needed a little nudge in the right direction. For some reason I just had read-only rights to the application data folder, even though I was installing with an administrator account. Go figger.

Anyway, I gave my account full rights to the folder, and just to make sure, I forced all child items to inherit properties from the parent object. Then I unchecked "hidden" and "read only", ran the installation package, unchecked "ID protection" in custom installation and PRESTO.... 2011 installed and updated without a hitch.

I considered dancing around the room to celebrate, but finally decided that I'm waaaaay to lazy to do it. There was a quick fist pump of victory though. wink

Thanks again!
