If you disable the identity protection, your pc's performance will improve significantly almost right away.

Not sure I feel entirely comfortable with that solution. I'm thinking that it's probably better to just get another software package for my computers.

Hi Big Al,
When the window flashed on my computer that I needed to update to 2011 Program it did not state computer requirements. So I did it. It seems to be OK, computer slowed down a little. The problem is that my laptop is 11 years old, Pentium III with only 256 RAM 848 Mghz. When I tried to find the old version AVG9, which I guess was the one before 2011 and was running fine on this oldie, on the site you directed us to it does not work. Do you know where to find AVG9. Does AVG not offer it anymore on their own site? Just in case I need to uninstall 2011 and reinstall AVG9. I know the requirements say min 512RAM, it seems to work OK with 256Ram, I really use this laptop for internet only, so maybe lack of any other programs etc helps run it with the 256Ram.
Thanks for any help.

I too have found that installing AVG 11 has had a very detrimental effect on my PC's performance.

For example:
- opening a PDF attached to an e-mail took well over a minute, during which time my PC was virtually unresponsive to do anything else (acrobat reader taking 45% CPU, AVG taking 50% cpu)
- starting a command prompt from (just entering "cmd" in the Windows start menu 'run' box) was impossible -- AVG process span at 50% CPU (i.e. all of one core) for well over two minutes, at which point I killed it using the windows process explorer; then the command window appeared instantly

I have:
- Dell Inspiron 350, 2.33GHz core 2 duo, 2 GB Ram, Vista 32 bit SP2
- AVG (free) version 10.0.1153, virus DB 424/3231

I have been a content AVG user for many years, but this kind of performance degradation is unacceptable.

Giving up on AVG..

I've also found the same problem on a number of different computers. We have a range of computers which have all used AVG for a number of years, but this latest release is a real mistake by AVG as I have uninstalled it from 10 computers this week ! thats not just a problem on one computer, everybody is finding the same issue, it is just too slow, I expect Microsoft are laughing their heads off as everyone moves over to Microsoft Security Essentials, maybe a Microsoft employee helped AVG develop the latest version ??

Hello MBiddiscombe,

can you try to disable Identity Protection component and then make your measurements ?
Have you already done 'Initial scan' / 'Optimization scan' ?
In AVG9 was not Identity Protection included, only in paid versions. When you disable it, it would be like in AVG9.

Thank you. This has been driving me nuts. Had uninstalled AVG but now have reinstalled and unchecked the identity protection checkbox and seems to be working fine.

Same story here. Two expensive i-based notebooks reduced to unresponsive junk by AVG 2011. They use to run great with AVG 9.0...Unistalled AVG and installed MSE and they run great again. I was such a loyal AVG user that I would have installed AVG 9.0 again but I can"t find it.....
